The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires the use of seat belts. All children must ride in safety seats until they are at least five years old and weigh over 40 pounds. Children who weigh over 40 pounds but are under five must ride in booster seats which are recommended for children five years of age or older who weigh 40 to 60 pounds. All other children must wear a properly adjusted safety belt. Drivers can be fined $25 for each unrestrained child. If you see someone driving with children who are not safely secured, call the Buckle-Up Hotline at 1-800-443-SAFE. No fine will be imposed, but information will be sent to the driver which explains the law. If you travel outside of Massachusetts to another state or to Canada, take your insurance policy or proof of insurance with you. Your Safety agent can provide these forms.
It is your responsibility to make sure that your safety inspection sticker and registration plates are current. If you do not renew on time, you may be fined and your insurance premium may be surcharged. |
